How to Decorate Like a Pro as a Renter

Regardless of your age or life stage, most of us rent at some point in our lives. Learn how to decorate like a pro without breaking your lease, or the bank.

Renting a house or apartment can offer many advantages, but also some disadvantages like lease restrictions on major alterations. If your space doesn’t feel quite like home or you haven’t redecorated in who knows how long, here are some non-permanent solutions that can change the entire look and feel of your space while still abiding by the rules.

Plants

Whether you possess a green thumb or you need to go the fake plant route, they’re a great option to add some life and color to your abode.

Statement rugs

If you have any non-carpeted areas that could use a little extra love without the hassle of replacing the flooring altogether, consider some rugs. They are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to add color and design to your kitchen, dining room or home office with far less mess.

Lamps

Everyone needs some extra light in certain areas, so consider finding a snazzy floor or desk lamp (local thrift stores are a good place to start). They are a subtle design element that’s both functional and stylish.

Contact paper

Not feeling those yellowing countertops? Try contact paper countertop coverings and turn even the dingiest countertop into marble, tile, or whatever pattern your heart desires. The best part? You can peel it right back off when you move out - just ensure the type you get is removable, of course.

Art

Decorating your walls with artwork, personal photos or other decorative hangings can be a great way to personalize your space while staying within the confines of your lease. If you aren’t allowed to nail them into the wall, try Command strips (or something similar) to hang them securely and easily remove them without leaving holes when you’re ready. Create groupings in focal areas for some added visual interest.

Try out these tips and you’ll have a space that will make you - and your landlord - happy in no time. Home sweet home!
